Igor
Ahoy, mateys! 'Tis International Talk Like A Pirate Day! And, because of the festive holiday mood, your's truly went off and caught the first showing of Igor at the local cinema!
A couple of things make Igor stand out from other animated movies. The first is that this isn't a Disney or Pixar production. Secondly, it's got a PG rating, which, given some of the content, is completely understandable. Finally, for a film that's apparently been marketed towards kids, it's not really that kid friendly.
Some of the voice casting is interesting. John Cussack provides the voice for the title character, while Christian Slater provides the voice for another Igor. Eddie Izard plays the movie villain, the despicable Doctor schadenfreude, while John Cleese has a brief stint as another evil scientist, Dr. Glickenstein. Other celebrities providing voice talent include Jay Leno and Arsenio Hall.
And that, I think is, the movie's big failure. Voice acting is a specialized niche and almost none of the principle character's voices really do justice to the roles. The only one that does is Molly Shannon, as Eva.
Overall, the story is predictable, if somewhat darker than most animated fare. Parents with young children will probably want to skip this movie and children over a certain age will probably get bored with it. Parents will probably get a chuckle or two out of some of the bits, but most of them will go over the heads of their offspring.
Personally, I think the best bit in the movie is near the end, where Eva is in the Killoseum and performs a magnificently violent rendition of The Sun'll Come Out from the musical, Annie.
All in all though, I don't think Igor will have any real staying power in the theater. On the Melworks Scale of Movie Love, I'd have to give it a three. Do yourself a favor and wait for it to come out on Pay-Per-View, and go rent Scary Godmother for the kids.
