"It will winter soon,” said Belasco. “We’ll have snow on the ground and that will only make travel harder. If we’re going to leave, we should do it soon.”
“I agree,” said Norman. He grimaced. “And I don’t mind saying that these old bones of mine aren’t looking forward to a long trip in the cold.”
There were sympathetic nods around the metal table.
“Before we decide on a date,” said Nancy, “shouldn’t we try and gauge what sort of reception we’ll get back east?”
“Chilly,” said Hempstead. “The quarantine is still in place. Probably will be until spring.”
“So we get back east and we’re sitting on our duffs in a quarantine camp outside the city,” said Norman. The old man scowled. “If that’s the case maybe we should consider staying in town until spring.”
“Do we have enough supplies for that?” Nancy asked.
“We do,” said Marielle Coke.
“So we’ve got another option,” said Hempstead.
“Not a good one,” pointed out Belasco. “The horde will surge out with the spring. If we wait until then we could be neck deep in Zombies.”
That gave everyone at the table pause. No one wanted to be caught in a swarm of revenants. There was a reason the settlement had stout walls, that the farmland beyond it was peppered with concrete bunkers and watchtowers.
“So what do we do?” asked Norman Harvard.
“We vote,” said Mayor Coke.
