Happy New Year
Jan. 1st, 2024 06:53 pmSo, that's 2023 in the can.
It was, I believe, a fairly maudlin year. It could have been better, but it also could have been much, MUCH worse.
Depending, I suppose, on where you were at the end of the year.
But it's done and over with and now 2024 stetches out ahead of us, a tabula rasa, waiting for us to make our mark upon it.
Here's hoping we don't fuck it up.

Christmas 2023
Dec. 25th, 2023 10:51 amI don't much care for Christmas.
The holiday doesn't hold much reasonance for me.
I prefer marking the Winter Solstice/Yule. That's more relevant to me, because even though it marks the official start of the winter season, it also heralds the return of longer days.
When you have photoreactive Seasonal Affective Disorder, more natural light is always a good thing.
Christmas, though, is mostly just work and obligation. I'm not one of the people who forces themselves to be 'jolly' all season long or anything, but there is a certain pressure when you work in a retail environment to give people what they expect. So, I wear the sparkly elf hat and play the Christmas music, and smile and ask the usual Christmas questions, while inside I feel as empty as a politican's promise.
But, it's done now. The day has come.
I'm going to get dressed and go to The Store and take down the Christmas decorations I put up two weeks ago, and then I'm going to come home and dress Bonaparte for the Winter Season.
I'm thinking it may be time to retire me old plastic skull.
Or maybe not.
We'll see.
Anyway, I hope all of you out there enjoy the day and the season, if you're so inclined. And, if you don't, well, just take comfort in the knowledge you probably won't have to think about it again until next October, when all the Christmas stuff shows up again.

Bah! Humbug!
Dec. 10th, 2023 09:28 pmWe're two weeks away from Christmas and I'll be glad to see the backside of this particular holiday. Working in retail does not endear this particular holiday season to me, especially as the closer we get to the Big Day, the more like assholes people act.
Anyway, I'll be celebrating Yule on the 21st with a candlelight vigil. That's the holiday that has more spiritual reasonance with me anyway. The longest night of the year. Then we get a gradual return of the light, as we move into the proper Winter season.

Summer Solstice 2023
Jun. 21st, 2023 09:44 pmToday was a miserable day, weather-wise. It rained here all day long with nary a peep of sun, and this weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
If the first day of summer is meant to predict the rest of the season, this does not bode well, meteorologically.
I spent most of the afternoon with my friend, Paul. It was his 56th birthday today and I took him to a doctor's appointment. While he got poked and prodded, I sat outside the office (because the waiting room was FRIGID), and mucked about on my phone for almost 2 hours.
Then it was back to his place, to chat for a while, and then I left for home.
But instead of going straight home, I stopped by the Game Store to see if they had anything new. They did not, although I was tempted by one or two things they did have.
Then, I went by Wendy's got some food and came home, where I am lamenting the fact that I haven't figured out how to dress Bonaparte the Skull for the summer season.
I think, tomorrow, I shall take a trip to Dollar Tree and see what pops out at me.
Anyway, Happy Solstice!
May your days be bright,
your nights be cool,
your summer be free
of fights with fools!

Happy New Year
Jan. 1st, 2023 12:12 pmRabbit, rabbit, rabbit. Hare, hare, hare.
That works at the start of the year like it does at the start of the month. Right?
Let's hope so.
New Year's Eve was nice. Spent the evening with Jorg and Hannah. We drank three bottles of champagne, they had some delta-8 gummies and we played Guillatine until the ball drop.
Which was anticlimactic.
Was it ever exciting to stay up till midnight and watch a ball drop?
I mean, seriously. Who thought that up?
The new year has gotten off to a rocky start. My phone alarm went off this morning, even though I had turned it off last night. Lately, the clock has been jumping back an hour at random intervals, which is very frustrating. I thought it might have been a virus or malware but when I scanned my phone the antivirus/malware app said it was clean. If shennanigans continue I may just have to do a reset.
Things to do today:
SHAVE! I haven't shaved in a week and my face feels super scratchy. So, off with the beard!
Visit the Momster. This will be a short visit, to return some plastic ware I took home on Christmas that was loaded with macaroni pie & roast beef.
Check on Paul. Our friend, Gina, was staying at his place in an RV while she and her hubby are waiting on an Italian residency visa, but now they're relocated to an AirBnB and Paul's by himself again. So, I will make welfare phone checks part of my weekly thing for a little while.
Return to the Solo! It's been a week and I'm itching to play again.
I am considering a challenge posted in one of my solo Facebook groups. The base challenge is to design a dungeon room each day for the next year. At the end of the year, you'd have a 365 room megadungeon to explore.
I'm thinking of designing a town/village/community. One town per week. At the end of the year, I'd have 52 towns on file for games.
Also, tomorrow I am climbing, shakily, back onto the diet bandwagon. Not for weight loss, but for general health. First step? Giving up regular soda for diet soda.
Oh! And I have to put up my New Moon Calendar. I got it last month and it looks spiffy!
Anyway, hope y'all had a good New Year's Eve and that 2023 starts off well for everyone.

Dec. 26th, 2022 09:47 pmSo, Christmas has come and gone.
Thank God.
I know most people like Christmas, but when you work in retail, the last two months of the year are a bloody nightmare.
So, when Christmas Eve comes, I'm as happy as a drunken man because the big push is over and we'll just coast along until tax returns start to come in and then the next big sale window opens.
Yeah, welcome to my world.
Honestly? I don't start to feel Christmassy until after the New Year. Someone told me I should just celelbrate Russian Christmas. Technically, the Christmas season does last until January 8th.
I'm just glad that it's over.
I'll be even more glad when this year comes to an end and 2023 starts.
And then I'll be a year older (Hurrah?) and a year closer to collecting my retirement. :D

Autumn Equinox
Sep. 22nd, 2022 11:19 pmTonight, the Autumn Season officially begins.
As I sit here, typing this, the wind is racing around the house. The sky is warm and cloudy, threatening rain. Tomorrow, the high will be in the 70s.
I may wear jeans.
Anyway, happy equinox to everyone out there. In this time of transition, may you leave behind the things that hold you back. - xoxo Me

Happy New Year!
Jan. 1st, 2022 01:16 amBetty White passed away today, which cast a bit of gloom over the end of year festivities. But not by much.
Honestly, tonight has been lackluster. We all stayed home and hung out around the tv and at one AM things came to an end.
It was wet and warm here, and some of the neighbors are still setting off fireworks, the goons.
At Jorg's request, I had a single glass of champagne at midnight, which I sort of regret.
The store's not open tomorrow, so I shall have a nice lie in.
I hope everyone out there has a good new year.
God knows, I hope I have one.- xoxo MEL

Christmas 2021
Dec. 25th, 2021 09:49 pmChristmas has been quite nice this year, all things considered.
I stayed home, and had lunch with Jorg and his new girlfriend, Leeann. She cooked, and it was quite good, even though she had an accident with the mixer while making the mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes went EVERYWHERE. I'm still finding bits and pieces hours later.
I have watched the original Miracle on 34th Street, Terry Pratchett's Hogfather and the 1970 Scrooge, starring Albert Finney. I have also watch 'The Christmas Lunch Incident' ep of The Vicar of Dibley and just finished listening to The Scarifyers' special Christmas shorts, "The Yule Lads" and "Mr. Crowley's Christmas."
I have no idea what to watch/listen to next.
Anyway, I hope everyone has had a nice Christmas.

Thanksgiving 2021
Nov. 25th, 2021 11:45 amToday is Thanksgiving, here in the US, and, despite it's controversial history, I view it as a day to assess and share what I'm thankful for: my family, my friends and my improving health.
I went to the urologists this past Monday and had the stent removed. It was very quick and there was no pain, just a weird sensation that I can't really describe. Also, I didn't need the laughing gas, as the nurse told me it would be over in, literally, three seconds. She did not exagerate.
I was still taking some meds, but I finish them today.
My appetite is returning, so that's good.
The worst thing at the moment is some remnant discomfort from where the stent was and, weirdly enough, hard stools.
The last could be a result of the painkillers I've been taking.
However, it's nice to be able to sit again without discomfort and stand up without emulating a pregnant woman. When the stent was in, I levered myself out of chairs, crotch-first.
It was probably funny as hell, watching me do that, but it certainly didn't feel very nice.
Anyway, it's all over. *Fingers crossed*
I go back to the urologist for a checkup in 6 weeks.
Today, despite being Thanksgiving, I am not gorging myself on food. I've had a pop tart so far and that's it, and a big glass of warm water.
Later, I may have my traditional Thanksgiving Pizza.
Or I may not.
And that's where I am right now.
I hope all of you have a nice day. - xoxo MEL

Halloween 2021
Oct. 31st, 2021 07:14 pmHappy Halloween and Samhain blessings to all this night.
I'm feeling a bit sad right now, as I decided to end my YouTube Channel this evening. I did a short video, wishing everyone farewell.
I was going to wait for the 250th video, but, like I say in the video, a good guest knows when it's time to leave. So that's what I did.
Also, I don't really feel like I can say anything else about my chosen subject. At this point, I'd just be repeating myself ad nauseum.
So, it was time to say goodbye.
Now I'm going to have this big gap in my week. I won't know what to do with myself on Tuesday afternoons anymore.
Maybe I should go and help out at the Store?
I don't know.
All I know it that it's Halloween and it's time to move forward.
I wish Jorg were home, but he had to pack up the booth at the show and then he's probably going out eating/drinking with his buddies. I did have some things I wanted to do tonight, but I don't want to leave Shadowpup alone. He gets super-neurotic if he's left alone too long.
Anyway, I hope all of you are having a good night.

Happy Autumn
Sep. 22nd, 2021 07:34 pmToday is the first day of Autumn, although you couldn't tell by the local temperature. Highs in the 80s, with cloudy skies and intermittent showers.
Nevertheless, this is the official start of Autumn and I am welcoming it with wine, music and apples.
I've decided to hold off on swapping out my wardrobe until it's cooler. Maybe closer to Halloween.
Today and tonight are times of balance and I sincerely hope that all of you find the equilibrium you need to maintain a healthy, happy life. - xoxo MEL

Happy Lammas/Lughnasadh
Aug. 1st, 2021 12:08 pmIt's 90 degrees outside right now, so it doesn't really feel like autumn. Nevertheless, today is Lughnasadh, or Lammas, the first of the fall harvest festivals. I'm working at the Store today and gaming tonight, so I won't be able to do a proper thanksgiving ritual until tomorrow, but later today I will be celebrating with some alcoholic beverages and possibly some snacks.
Most people associate Lughnasadh/Lammas with bread, so drinking beer is a fine way to celebrate. But people tend to forget that corn is also harvested at this time of the year, so if you're not into baking bread (or are just really bad at it, like some of us) it's perfectly acceptable to pop some popcorn. :)
Anyway, happy holiday to those that celebrate it.

Today we had an event at the Store; it involved 10 local artists painting murals outside, vendors in the parking lot selling various wares, two food trucks(Yum!) and live music. The event was done to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish charity and it went off without a hitch.
I can't think of a better way to start the merry month of May.
Well, maybe something that doesn't involve me standing on my feet for 9+ hours, but that's just a little gripe.
I hope all of you had a fine May Day.

Beltane 2021
Apr. 30th, 2021 10:50 pmTonight is Beltane. I was going to do something more formal for the evening this year, but I just couldn't seem to pull anything together. So, I'm lying here in bed, burning some incense, letting a candle flicker on my bedside table and listening to Pagan music while I snack on Cheetos Puffs. This is not the celebration I envisioned, but it is what it is.
If I'm being totally honest, this whole month has been a bit of a disappointment to me. I'm still struggling to get back on track with my diet, I just feel this general sense of dissatisfaction with my life and I don't want to be around anyone. I just want to be alone.
Tomorrow we're having this big event at the Store and I'm dreading it. I don't want to be around a bunch of people all damn day with rock music blasting from the back room and screaming children underfoot. I'm worried that Something Bad will happen, but I don't know what.
I just want this whole month to be over already.
This isn't the entry I was anticipating writing tonight, but, like I said, it is what it is. Maybe it will rekindle the fire in my soul tomorrow. Or maybe I should just think about starting a new fire.
We'll have to see.

Happy Solstice!
Dec. 21st, 2020 12:21 pmToday is Solstice.
Thank God.
Now we start to gain light back and things, literally, start to look a bit brighter.
I'm celebrating this afternoon as sunset with an all-night vigil. I'll be partaking in a virtual ceremony and possibly enjoying some wine and fruitcake. The last is undecided.
Also, I have to wrap Jorg's Christmas present which means I have to grab some paper and some tape.
Also, it's a Free Day! Yay!
Thank God.
