Hmm.
So, in preparation for going to see The Dark Knight today, I rented the animated Batman: Gotham Knight last night.
And, y'know what?
I liked the animated version better.
I'm not trying to slam The Dark Knight, I just think that Gotham Knight did a better job of catching the tone of the character.
The Dark Knight was a decent movie, but it just felt really, really grim. Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker was memorable, but I kept getting distracted by his tongue. He was constantly licking his lips or the side of his mouth. I know it was intentional, a tic designed to show the character's nervous energy, but it was just really fucking annoying. The rest of the cast was really good. My biggest complaint was that when Christian Bale was portraying Batman, he was pitching his voice deeper. I kept thinking that someone should give Batman a eucalyptus throat mint or something. Wasn't a big fan of the Two-Face makeup. I think they should have gone subtler.
Would I recommend the movie to people, to go see? Sure. In a minute. Would I go see it again? Um, no. 'Fraid not.
But I would go rent Batman: Gotham Knight again.
On the Melworks Scale of Movie Love, I'd give The Dark Knight a six out of ten. Definitely worth paying full prices for and may bear up to repeat viewing by other people.
As for Batman: Gotham Knight? On the Melworks Scale of Movie Love, I'd give that a solid eight out of ten. Interesting stories and interesting animation that I think could stand up to multiple viewings.
