Wonder Woman
Themiscyra.
Thousands of years ago, the Amazons withdrew from the World of Men, to build a paradise for themselves on an isolated island, protected by magic and myth. Led by Queen Hippolyta, life on Themiscyra was idyllic, until Patriarch's World intruded in the form of a crashing jet plane and a handsome young Air Force pilot, Lt. Steve Trevor.
Trevor's arrival on the island caused a rift in the Amazons. Many thought it best to simply kill the outsider, to ensure their security. Others argued that if a man could reach the island, perhaps it was a sign from the gods that their self-imposed isolation should come to an end. The debates between factions were heated, at best.
In the end, Hippolyta intervened. She decreed that Trevor would be returned to Patriarch's World, and that she would accompany him, not only to ensure his safety, but to preserve the security of Themiscyra. Her subjects protested, but Hippolyta was adamant.
Leaving the island, Hippolyta was gone for almost three months. Her Amazon sisters feared the worst. Upon her safe return, there was great rejoicing.
That rejoicing took on a different flavor when it became apparent that Hippolyta had returned pregnant. Months later, her daughter, Diana, became the first Amazon to be born on Themiscyra.
As the child grew to adulthood it became apparent that Diana had been blessed by the gods. Strong, fast and intelligent she was trained by her fellow Amazons in all the ways of war and strategy.
Years later, Diana would ask her mother about her father and Hippolyta would reluctantly admit that it had been Steve Trevor. Wanting to meet the man, Diana's plans of a stealthily leaving Themiscyra were derailed by the machinations of the god, Ares. Driven mad, Ares planned to spark a war that would destroy the world. The Amazons' gods ordered them to select a champion, to thwart Ares's agents in the mortal world.
Holding a contest, wherein the contestants were masked to avoid favoritism or mercy, one Amazon rose, head and shoulders above the others. The revelation that this great warrior was Princess Diana came as a shock to everyone, but no Amazon would go against the will of the gods.
Armed and armored, Diana left Themiscyra, venturing into Patriarch's World. There, she succeeded in defeating Ares's plan.
During her adventures, she met her father, Steve Trevor, now a colonel in the U.S. Air Force. She also met her younger half-sister, Lyta, who displayed gifts similar to Diana's own.
With Ares's plan undone, and the god himself restored to sanity, Diana's mission in Patriarch's World was accomplished. But she finds herself reluctant to return to Themiscyra, after tasting the wonders that the outside world has to offer.
