I work in a comic shop. One of the largest comic shops in the United States.
Today, the owner announced that we were getting out of the business of selling new comics. As of November, we will only be selling back issues, used books and collectable toys.
I am not happy with this decision. No one really is.
The owner, a very nice man, has this ridiculous idea that people come to the store to mainly buy back issues and, occasionally, pick up new comics. When, in reality, it's the inverse. People come in to buy new comics and then go buy some cheap ass back issues from our $1 room.
We are canceling all of our subscribers. Although the owner is reaching out to some of the 'whale' customers to see if they want to keep their current subs going. I can tell him right now that they will not.
We're going to lose a shit ton of customers and we are not going to make up their loss in other department sales. We're going to lose all our lovely new college subscribers we've picked up in the last few months, and our out-of-town customers as well.
By the end of January, if we last that long, I suspect the owner to realize what a huge mistake he's made. But by then it will be too late. Even if we go back to selling 'new' comics we'll have lost a ton of custom.
Needless to say, I'm not thrilled with this new business model.
I don't want to work in a junk shop and that's basically what the store is going to become.
But I'll try and tough it out until they can't afford me any more.
And then?
Well, then we'll see what happens....
