So, I'm a pretty big fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and was somewhat disappointed by its successor, Avatar: The Legend of Korra. My main reason being that Korra wasn't a very likable person. She still isn't really likable; she's not a character I would want to hang out with or anything. But I still watch A:LOK because the world is interesting and, this season, the storyline has been excellent. Someone pointed out that A:LOK's seasons have been all about power: acquiring it, seeing it abused for personal gain and, this season, being used to further anarchistic leanings. Personally, I think the show is mirroring late 19th century social models; we see increased mechanization, electric lights, and growing social unrest with the long-established way things have been done.
The show has gotten really good, so imagine my surprise to learn that Nickolodean had pulled it from the airwaves and decided to make the remaining episodes available exclusively digital. A lot of people have jumped on Nic because they feel they didn't promote the show as strongly as they could have, nor have they supported it as strongly as they should have.
Perhaps they're right; but in this day and age of Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, does a show really need a television audience to survive and prosper? Granted, A:LOK's ratings have paled in comparison to her predecessors, but they still rank in the millions. I can't help but wonder what would happen if the creators took to something like Kickstarter to fund the show?
All this aside, I'm left with an important question: if season 3 is doing so badly that they've taken it off the air, will season 4 even get shown?
I'm still not a fan of Korra, but I would like to see the show get a definitive ending. On the air or on the web, it doesn't really matter. I just hope Nick doesn't leave us hanging.
