I started 'Gideon the Ninth' by Tamsyn Muir the other day. The book has a lot of good reviews surrounding it, mostly boiled down to the concept of 'sword lesbians in space!'
I got about four chapters in before I gave up.
The characters weren't interesting, the world didn't feel fully realized to me and I was left with an overwhelming impression of 'meh.'
So, I have abandoned this book and am moving on to somethiing else.

I've started reading Mona of the Manor, the tenth Tales of the City Book by Armistead Maupin. My roommate, C, loaned it to me. So far, I'm about a hundred pages into the book, and it's all right, but not exactly riveting. I do intend to finish it, but I'm hoping for a twist somewhere along the way that will take the drama up a notch.

Another gray, miserable day here today. Tonight, it's raining cats and dogs and they're calling for storms early in the morning. Just what we all need. *eyeroll*
Ran the Store today on my own, as Jorg stayed home. Probably just as well as we don't know if he's been infected with the plague or not. His girlfriend is getting tested tomorrow. I told him he should get tested, but he's ignored me.
I go into the urologist's tomorrow for my six week checkup. I'm still experiencing discomfort on the left side, but I don't know if it's kidney related or not. I hope to find out tomorrow.
Also, I must call the hospital tomorrow and ask them to send me an itemized bill with all the medical codes, as I looked at my bill online last night and there are anomalies. Also, I want to find out what's going on with the uninsured discount I should have got for the third procedure that they didn't apply.
Am currently reading 'Tales from the Hinterlands' a book of creepy fairystories that is a companion piece to a book called 'The Hazel Wood' by Melissa Albert. The stories are very entertaining, and have a genuine fairy tale feel to them, but without being prettied up for little children. My favorite, so far, has got to be 'The House Under the Stairwell.'

A Good Day

Today was beautiful. We had highs in the low 70s, the sun was out and there was nary a breeze to be felt. After making the video for YT (always a bit frought since my damn Chromebook decided to become a bit buggy!), I went questing for a book.
Specifically, I went looking for a paperback copy of Dorothy Gilman's A Nun in the Closet. I've read that book a few times over the years and I've always enjoyed it, and I want to read it again but I can't seem to find a physical copy anywhere.
The other day I went to all the chain bookstores we still have in town, but they didn't even have any Gilman on the shelf. So,today, I went to the secondhand bookstores around town. Alas, I did not find the book I was looking for, but I did find more books to add to my stacks.
I got a nice paperback copy of The Unexpected Mrs. Polifax, also by Dorothy Gilman, and a very nice cloth paperback of The Hobbit with a very pretty dust jacket. And when I went by the library, to see if they had a copy (they did not), I came across a new William Gibson book, The Agency which I have checked out.
So, not exactly a failure of a day. The worst part was getting stuck in traffic for 40 FUCKING MINUTES because of road construction on Broad River. Ugh. I eventually got so pissed I did a 180 and got the hell out of there.
Home now, listening to Pandora on the laptop, digesting a nice meal of cauliflower, diced potatoes and pasta sauce. Just swept out the upstairs, did the dishes and smashed the welcome rugs against the trees, so I feel very productive. Even if I haven't cleaned my own room this month, so far.
And I'm not doing laundry tonight.
Screw that.
I'll do it next week.
Tonight there will be music, books and, if I can find it, something funny to watch online. Because tomorrow, I work.

The boss just acquired 300 hardback sci-fi/fantasy books for the store. So, this weekend I shall be organizing and processing the lot. Having glanced through a couple of the boxes, I'm thinking most of the books will fall in the $5. Some look a little rough around the edges and some are duplicates of stuff that we already have. In any event, I'll be swapping out books in the Book Room for the next few weeks.
Oh joy.
