The other day I started a new solo RPG game.
I rolled up a character: Xander Rook. He's fairly cunning, but that's about all he's got going for him. His Danger & Fortitude are average, and his Sway is a little below average. Also, when I randomly rolled for descriptors, I got "religious" and "fat." That made me scratch my head, until I rolled up a profession for him: baker. So, I figure he's a baker who's a bit overweight because he's always testing his product. As for the religious part? Well, he's a regular churchgoer. But does he have real faith? I suppose we'll find out down the line somewhere.
In the first session, we are introduced to Xander and his employer, Mrs. Honoria Frost. He's asked to deliver an order of bread to Edgestone House, the home of Lord & Lady Zeal. He sets out, has a nice meeting with a church friend, Miss Juliette Darling, who's off to paint landscapes. When he gets to Edgestone House, things take a turn for the worse as Xander is attacked by a strange dog, which he kills(?) in self-defense. He has interactions with various members of the Edgewater House staff(Lattice the Butler, Mrs. Purse the Cook and Kevin West, a hallboy), before leaving with a gold coin in his pocket for his troubles. As he's leaving, Xander has a conversation with a sickly looking child who informs him that the dog belongs to his stepsister and he's glad it's dead.
In the second session, Xander is back at the bakery. He told Mrs. Frost about his experience at Edgestone House. She's sympathetic, but asks if they paid Xander for the bread. They did, of course, but Xander doesn't tell her that they gave him extra 'for his troubles.' After all, he reasons, they were his troubles, not Mrs. Frost's. Later, he learns from Mrs. Frost that there are rumors that Lord Zeal is in serious financial trouble. When Mrs. Frost goes on an errand, Xander watches the storefront and meets a newcomer to Mistwater, Miss Fiona Blackpearl.
So far, the game has a very Studio Ghibli feel to it. Aside from the encounter with the dog, nothing too fraught has happened. Yet. But I've got some questions to answer. What's going on at Edgewater House? Who's dog attacked Xander? Will there be fallout from that down the road? What's the deal with Miss Darling? Are she and Xander simply friends? And what about the newcomer, Miss Blackpearl? Why did she and her brother move to Mistwater from the city of Heron Bay?
I'm curious to see where the story takes me.
