I hated the name Kato so I changed the dwarf NPC's name to Hewl.
Anyway, Liam and Hewl set off for Wildbrook. On their second day in the wilderness, they ran afoul of an emberdrake. Imagine a reptilian creature made of burning coal, able to breath fire and inflict fire damage along with its bite attack and you'll have a good idea of what an emberdrake is like. The two fought it and barely survived.(Mainly because I flubbed the monster's HP when I was statting it and gave it too much!)
The two were found by a band of dwarf hunters that Hewl summoned before collapsing and they were taken to a lodge to recover. After a few days, during which Liam met Hewl's sister, Brietta, the two set off again. Hewl was more open after the emberdrake fight, but still pretty taciturn.
On the second day, after leaving the hunters, however, Liam and Hewl encountered the emberdrake queen. The emberdrake queen was a large creature with vestigial wings and more HP. Hewl and Liam tried to stealth it, but Liam kept rolling badly and the emberqueen attacked.
The battle was vicious. Hewl was killed. After Hewl's death, the emberqueen seemed content and, nursing her own wounds, withdrew from the fight.
Liam buried Hewl in a grave of branches and packed snow. He took his battleaxe for defense, planning to return it to Brietta, after finishing his job in Wildbrook. He made it to the road and got directions to Wildbrook. It was easy enough for him to find Constable Skegg and hand over the satchel to him. When he did, the cursed promise ring Nerisa had given Liam vanished off of his finger. Afterwards, Liam was given 150g by Constable Skegg's assistant, Solana, speaking for Granny Southmoore.
His obligation to Nerisa completed, Liam was now free to pursue his own agenda: returning the battleaxe to Hewl's sister and then making his way to Mistgate.

This adventure didn't get combat heavy until the last two sessions. If Hewl had lasted another session, I would have made him a PC, rather than an NPC.
Now, Liam has to figure out how to find Brietta and how to get to Mistgate. But, I suspect his time in Wildbrook, will not be without incident.
