Finally got a chance to go to the movies the other day and saw Sherlock Holmes. I went in with some trepidation, as I've heard some people say that the movie "felt uneven." One person even described it as "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Lite." Neither of these were glowing recommendations, but I shoved them aside and bought a ticket.
I'm glad I did. Sherlock Holmes is probably one of the more entertaining movies that I've seen in a while. The cast is excellent, the plot was interesting, and the comparison to the dreadful cinematic adaptation of LXG was mercifully unfounded.
Robert Downy Jr. shines as the titular character, and Jude Law does a fine Doctor Watson. The inclusion of Irene Adler was a bit of a surprise and I loved the fact they kept Moriarty in the shadows. During all the stories, Holmes and Moriarty only met twice, I think. It's a cinematic convention that the two men are long standing enemies.
But that's neither here nor there.
On the Melworks Scale of Movie Love, I'd give Sherlock Holmes a solid six. It's definitely worth paying full price for and would probably stand up to repeated viewings. And I'm already looking forward to the inevitable sequel.
