Estelle Getty, who gained fame as the octogenarian Sophia Patrillo on NBC's The Golden Girls, passed away this morning. That makes me sad. :(
Also, an advertisement campaign proclaiming "South Carolina is so gay!" has backfired horribly. Apparently, some genius in the South Carolina State Tourism Office rubber stamped an ad campaign targeting gay tourists. The ads, plastered all over the London Underground, proclaimed the charms of South Carolina's plantation homes and 'gay beaches.'
Um. There are gay beaches in South Carolina? I grew up there and I never heard of any. If you were to ask anyone who lived there today to point out a gay beach, I don't think they could.
Anywho, the ad has been brought to the attention of the public and they're not having any of it. The government functionary who approved it, resigned last week. The State Tourism Board is saying the poor schmuck didn't have the authority to approve the ads and so they're not paying for them.
The people I feel sorry for are those unsuspecting European tourists, laden down with beach chairs and umbrellas, wandering the coastline in search of those mythical gay beaches. Heh.
