Writing groups

Over on the Other Blog I just did a post about writing groups and my experience with them.
To put it bluntly, I hate writing groups. I think they're a big waste of time, that they do more to foster someone's insecurities about writing than helping them with their craft. Don't even get me started on the types of people I encountered during my experience. The less said about them the better.
It's been years since I belonged to a writing group, but I was surprised at how angry writing about the topic made me. It was like tearing a Band-aid off a partially scabbed wound. All the vitriol just wanted to pour out of me, onto the page.
I didn't let that happen, of course. What would be the point? Plus, I had to admit that there are a couple of good reasons for joining a writing group. First of all, if you join one group it's unlikely you'll want to join another, and, secondly, the people who make up those groups can provide a hell of a lot of fodder for writing horror.
