The Liam Solo
Dec. 1st, 2022 09:31 pmHaving resolved things with the Sisterhood, Liam sets out to find Brietta and return Hewl's axe. To help him, he decides to spend some of his money, hiring a guide who knows the local area. After making some inquiries, he meets Jack Silverwren, a one-eyed guide. Silverwren agrees to guide Liam to the hunting lodge, which he already knows of, but only after the two negotiate a fair price for the guide's services.
They depart two days later and, on the journey to the lodge, Silverwren and Liam talk a bit. The guide offers Liam some friendly advice: leave Wildbrooke as soon as possible as he's been noticed by folk, as has his connection to the Sisterhood.
They arrive at the lodge to find it empty, but with evidence that the dwarves are still using it. They settle in to wait for the hunting party, and Silvewren explains that the lodge doesn't belong to the dwarves but to the rangers, who let others use it, as long as its not trashed.
The next day the dwarves return and Liam gets to return Hewl's axe to Brietta. She is stoic, but grateful for his efforts. The group stays up late that night, singing mournful songs and telling stories about Hewl. Brietta says that they will bury her brother in the spring, after the ground has thawed.
Liam and Silverwren head back to Wildbrook, but get caught in a sudden snowstorm that delays them. They survive, and the two part company back in Wildbrook. Silverwren reminds Liam that he should probably get out of town and Liam takes his advice to heart.
The next day, Liam seeks out Constable Solana at the watch house. They go to a nearby cafe where they have hot tea and honeyed frybread. Solana looks tired and she and Liam talk about the resolution of his quest and a new complication facing Wildbrook; another of the Free Cities has fallen to an invading force led by some kind of undead known simply as the Night Queen. The Sisterhood is working with the city's government to assess and deal with the potential threat. Solana warns Liam it might be a day or so before they can transport him to Mistgate. Liam is understanding and returns to his inn.
The next day, however, Solana comes for Liam and tells him its time to go. They return to Granny Southmoore's house, where the witches perform a ritual that transports Liam to a point near Mistgate. They can't transport him directly to the city as the wards around it are far too strong. Instead, they drop him about twenty miles away.
Liam arrives and heads toward a nearby fishing village called Umberport. Along the road he has a nasty encounter with a local woman. In Umberport, he speaks with a tavernkeeper and gets directions to Mistgate before encountering the rude woman again. The tavernkeeper throws her out of his bar, and Liam commiserates with him. When Liam leaves the tavern, he sees the rude woman in a violent confrontation with a local watchman. He watched with a certain degree of schaudenfrued as the woman is arrested, before going on his way.
Liam heads to Mistgate, but along an empty stretch of road, he is attacked by a woman. The two fight and Liam takes an arrow to the shoulder before killing the woman with his shortsword. As he is examining the woman, another figure emerges from the forest, a blonde elf-woman who eventually introduces herself as Glenna Hyofir. She's a bounty hunter, working for a local crimeboss called the Baron. The dead woman was stealing from the Baron and Glenna was sent to bring her back, dead or alive. She chops off the dead woman's head and invites Liam to come back with her, as she feels she owes him for making her job easier. She points out that he'll not reach Mistgate before sundown, when the city gates shut and that it's not safe after dark. Also, he still has an arrow stuck out of his shoulder.
In light of this argument, Liam agrees.

So, the world has expanded a bit. There's a menace to the Free Cities at World's Edge, in the form of the mysterious Night Queen. She may or may not appear in future sessions. We also got another named Free City, Iron Lake, which I've added to the notes.
If Liam hadn't managed to leave Wildbrook, he probably would have been recruited by the Sisterhood to help in the current crisis. That didn't happen, but the thread is there.
So far, the area around Mistgate has been pretty fucking brutal as far as law and order go. The law in this part of the world seems pretty heavy-handed, but penalties seem to include things like shunning and banning offenders.
Not sure why the dead woman attacked Liam. Maybe she wanted any money he had to help her get away from the Baron? Maybe Hyofir was lying? I suppose we'll find out soon enough.
And, if Liam ever manages to arrive at Mistgate, he'll have to come up with his next step.
Also, next session Liam levels up and gets a second Perk. I'm thinking of taking Magical again, to expand his number of spells. Or maybe Extra Action, so he can attack more than once per round.
