A while back, while brainstorming with the lovely
prof_h, I started writing some fic following the exploits of the children of the current DC Universe heroes and villains. This uni was dubbed DC20, because it was set 20 years into the future. One of my favorite characters was Kimera, the daughter of Wonder Woman. I've been giving some thought lately to returning to the DC20 Uni, and, well, here's a small offering of what it was like.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE
"Can I ask a question, Kim?"
Kimera glances up from the grave. She tosses a handful of weeds away. "Of course."
Tommy Harper hesitates, scratches his head. "Why do you keep coming here? I mean, you know he's not your real dad. Right? And, well, you didn't ever really know him..."
Kimera settles back on her haunches. "I know." She offers a weak smile. "This must seem really strange, huh?"
"Well...."
"He wasn't my father," says Kimera, resuming her weeding. "But for the longest time, I thought he was. And, well, he was a good dad."
She doesn't say anything else and Tommy doesn't ask any other questions. He kneels and helps her clean the overgrown gravesite, thinking about his own absent father and wondering which of them has the better role model.
