Wow. Has it really been a week since my last post here? Damn. Time flies and all that shit.
First things first.
St. Augustine was horrible. The words 'tourist trap' immediately spring to mind when I think of it. That and an overwhelming urge to punch people, because, hello? Everyone I met in that burg could have been an extra on The Jersey Shore, and, no, that is NOT a compliment. I can honestly say between the douchebags I met and the horrible hotel I stayed in, that I do not plan to go to St. Augustine's EVER AGAIN.
Actually, Florida is now pretty much crossed off my list of places that I want to visit. EVER AGAIN.
That said, even though Florida was a big disappointment, after I left the state things turned around. I stopped off in St. Mary's in Georgia, which was just charming. I loved their waterfront park and their historic downtown. I spent a couple of days there, just getting the stink of the Sunshine State off of me, then continued up the coast. While in St. Mary's, one of the store owners suggested I might like Jekyll Island.
I'd never heard of Jekyll Island before, but when I saw the exit on the Interstate, I said, "What the hell?" and took it.
I'm so glad that I did.
Jekyll Island is a barrier island off the Georgia coast, part of the so-called Golden Isles. Originally, it was the private retreat of several wealthy families, like the Rockafellers and such, back in the 1900s. The hotel and cottages that these people built remain standing today and form a wonderful historic district. Originally, I just planned to stay there for maybe a day, but wound up extending my stay for almost four days. I toured the Historic District, wandered along the beaches and enjoyed some excellent meals. By the time, I left I was incredibly relaxed. I would definitely go back, but next time I'm going to rent a cottage or something for a week.
I'm back in South Carolina today. I toodled over to Hilton Head Island yesterday, but didn't care for it, so I didn't say. At the moment, I'm in Point South, staying at a very comfy Best Western until tomorrow morning. Then, I'm probably going to head back home. Although, if I'm being brutally honest here, I'd rather not go home just yet. Part of me wants to go to the beach for another week, but I think two weeks of wandering and putting everything on the credit card is more than enough. Don't you?
Of course, having said that, I may just wind up somewhere like Las Vegas.
You never know.
More later. - MEL
