There's been an interesting amount of racewanking going on over at [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily re Grant Morrisson's Super Young Team. As I understand it, the bulk of complaints have been that Morrisson shouldn't have created a team of Japanese youth heroes who don't fit people's preconceptions of what Japanese superheroes would be like or what Japanese youth are like in the real world. Some of the discussions have gotten a bit pointed and resulted, so far, in two comm members being banned from NS_D and the Scans_Daily clonesite over at Insanejournal.
Personally, I find the debate to be commical and frustrating. God knows I didn't buy the Super Young Team mini, but the very first page depicts the character, Most Excellent Superbat, shouting out: "Super Young Team! Suspension of disbelief, on!"
You would think the readers and commentors would take that as a big ass clue.
On a purely personal level, I think the real reason people have had such a negative reaction to the Super Young Team is because they are tied to the excretable Final Crisis event. As an event, Final Crisis was a failure, so how can DC justify rolling out minis featuring characters from said event? As far as I know, no one was clamoring for the reappearance of the Super Young Team or the Tattooed Man or the Human Flame. No, I think Super Young Team is just guilty by association. The stink of Final Crisis clings to them still, and probably always will, until they die in the next crossover event or hang up their masks to become housewives and/or corporate wageslaves.
Everything else, all the wank, is just people jerking off and projecting their own socio-racial agendas onto one aspect of Morrisson's work.
At least, that's what I think.
