Heh. While wandering through the bookstore this weekend I happened to come across the latest issue of Superman & Batman, a title I usually don't both with. But the cover on this issue caught my attention, as it seemed to be a wierd amalgam of Gotham City and Metropolis. So, I flicked through the issue and was amused by the story; basically, Superman and Batman find themselves in a world where familiar elements have been squashed together, making them unfamiliar. For example, our heroes find themselves in the city of Gothamopolis, where they run afould of Police Commissioner White and get into a brawl with the members of the Justice Titans: Aquaborg, Flash, Hawkbeast, Night Lantern, Star Canary and Donna Wonder. Eventually, the good guys get together, just in time for a confrontation with the villain, Doomstroke, who seems to be working for Lex Joker.
Yeah.
The story itself was pretty whimsical, not surprising since I think S&B sits outside of mainstream continuity and the writers can do pretty much what they think.
The mashups seemed kind of random, but they did inspire me to pull out my copy of the DC Universe Encyclopedia and contemplate a few mashups of my own. Among the mashups were: Able Kadabra, Agent Acrata, Alias: Airwave, Alpha-Man, Ambush Man, Anarkyst, Animan, Atom Knight, Atomic Smasher, Beastgirl, Chronochief, Deathshot, Johnny Doomsday, Nathaniel Dragon, Elasti-Man, Felix Fairchild, Flashfire, Fluer, Lana Lane, Lucius Fortune, The Golden Face, Gorilla Gordon, The Green Guardian, Kid Croc, Kid Frost, Alexander "Lex" Lemaris, Major Mammoth, Mist Master, Monsieur Monitor, Nightwind, Professor Prometheus, The Red Ray, Warplord and Witchwind.
Amusingly, I couldn't come up with mashups for any of the Big Three. Although, I suppose my inherant dislike of them could be affecting my judgement.
All in all, though, the mashup process was pretty interesting and poses some interesting questions. Is Alias: Airwave a villain or a hero? How did Lex Lemaris become the richest merman in the world? What are the origins of Beastgirl and Nightwind? And is there a connection between Gorilla Gordan and Monsieur Monitor?
The mind reels.
