Today, Sarah Palin announced her intent to step down as Governor of Alaska at the end of the month. This announcement has come out of the blue and thrown pretty much everyone in Alaska for a loop. There's a lot of speculation that Palin is doing this now to prepare for a run at the presidency in 2012.
Yeah.
Like that's going to happen.
As a resident of Alaska, I can say that a lot of people weren't happy with Palin when she agreed to run as Vice-President with John McCain. People felt that she was turning her back on Alaska, in favor of the national stage and, to say the criticism of her decision was fierce, would be an understatement.
And then, when McCain lost his bid and Palin came back to Alaska, she still seemed more interested in events occurring outside the state. The Legislature became increasingly hostile toward her and the public criticism aimed at herself and her family didn't really abate.
And now she's stepping down as governor with almost two years left in her term.
If she's doing this to shield her family, I can understand it. Even appreciate it. But if she's doing it to prepare for a run at the White House in 2012, I don't see this being beneficial to her political career. Honestly, I can't see anyone voting for Palin for any government position after this.
The impression I've got, from everything I've read, is that Palin is bailing out. That the ethics complaints haven't stopped, that now that senior state administrative officials are coming forward claiming they were forced out by her political machine, the pressure has been ratched up another notch and she just can't take it.
Of course, I could be completely wrong.
She might be doing this to be the churchgoing mother of five. Or, God forbid, she could be sick or something. Whatever her reasons, I'm sure that speculation will run wild over the weekend, and just give the poli-geeks more material to masturbate over.
