So, what happened?
Torchwood won, in the end, but the way they won pretty much destroyed them.
Jack sacrificed his grandson to save the other kids and, after the 456 ran off, his guilt was so great that he left Earth.
Ironically, the most disturbing bit of the whole show, for me at least, was the end of John Frobisher. Rather than sacrifice his family to the aliens, he kills them and then himself.
Gwen and Rhys come through okay, but the fates of Alice, Lois and even the black ops team that allied with Torchwood remains unknown.
I'd like to think that Lois and the black ops team were recruited into Torchwood, that Gwen is now running things and that Jack is off in space hunting down the 456, maybe freeing the children from 1965.
As for Alice? Well, I can't honestly see her wanting to have anything else to do with Torchwood, not after they sacrificed her son. And, really, who could blame her?
As for whether or not Jack returns? I don't know. At this point, I think it's possible they could spin Torchwood into a new direction, make it much darker and more paranoid than the previous seasons.
I've read that a lot of folks have broken up with the show, since the end of the miniseries, because it went so dark and they killed off the fan favorites. But, honestly, I think this series was really good television and wouldn't mind another season.
