So, Comic-Con begins this week and I shall not be there.
I'm kind of sad, because it's the big con, but sort of relieved as well, because it's the Big Con.
Also, I don't need a repeat of the Welsh Soccer Team Incident of '98.
Still, I sort of miss the con experience. Going through the floor, finding that specific back issue you were looking for, or some small press book that you heard about but your shop didn't order and it was just too much bother, really, to place a special order.
I got to talk with Bill Willingham at the last con I attended. That was back when he was writing for LoneStar Press. That same con, I met the excellent guys who produced the ClassWar miniseries.
Of course, I don't miss the crowds, or the heat, or, to be honest, the cloud of geek-stink that tends to accumulate in the convention center. I certainly don't miss overpriced convention food, some truly unsanitary public toilets, or security guards overdosing on testosterone.
In retrospect, the positives of not attending the con kind of outweigh the negatives. And that's kind of sad.
