There's an interesting story in The Times about a New Zealand university student who has auctioned her virginity to pay for her tuition. She's apparently been offered NZ$45,000 for it.
The New Zealand police have stated that there's no crime here.
I'm sorry? Isn't selling sex for money prostitution? Isn't that a crime in New Zealand?
What's more interesting, was my reaction to this story. People who know me, know that I'm pretty much blase about sex. Wanna tie somebody up and lick chutney off their feet? Go right ahead. I don't care.
But I was genuinely appalled that this young woman, who has never had sex at all, would reduce her first time to a soulless cash transaction. And that there were people out there who would buy it. It just makes me shake my head.
God knows that I'm no prude. And there are times I've told people who bemoaned their celibate state to go hire a pro and stop whining.
But the first time, as hypocritical as this may make me, should be special. It sort of sets the standard for everything that comes afterwards, good or bad.
I can't help but think that this young woman, whomever she is, will probably come to regret her choice.
